The deal encompasses nearly 100 academic institutions, including renowned universities such as Karolinska Institutet,Lund University,Uppsala university, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
pensoft and the Bibsam consortium, operated by the national Library of Sweden, have officially signed a extensive Open Access (OA) agreement. This marks a significant milestone in the transition towards a more clear and open scholarly publishing landscape in sweden.
This move enables researchers from participating institutions to publish their findings in 65 journals published by Pensoft or using its advanced publishing platform ARPHA. These include flagship titles such as ZooKeys, PhytoKeys, Biodiversity Data Journal, NeoBiota, and IMA Fungus.
The agreement covers 97 research bodies, including prestigious institutions like Karolinska Institutet,Lund university,Uppsala University, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
All authors affiliated with participating institutions can take advantage of this agreement with no individual article processing charges (APCs) to worry about. The National Library of sweden has secured an institutional deposit that covers all publishing costs for these authors.
In contrast to conventional subscription-based systems, an OA framework ensures that scientific findings are immediately and freely available to the global community. This supports the worldwide shift towards accessible science and adheres to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).
Agreements like this one reduce financial barriers for scientists and encourage them to share their work with both academia and the wider public. This ultimately lowers barriers to sharing knowledge in a time when scientific input is crucial for solving global challenges.
“We are thrilled to establish this partnership with Bisbam and sign an agreement that reflects our strong commitment to open science. By supporting researcher-driven publishing, we continue to foster a sustainable surroundings for high-impact scientific interaction.”
Prof. Lyubomir Penev,CEO of Pensoft
“We are delighted to announce that Pensoft Publishers has been added to our portfolio of nationally funded agreements until 2026. This represents an crucial step towards achieving full open access for scientific publications in Sweden.”
niklas Willén, License Manager at Bibsam Consortium and National library of Sweden
If you are affiliated with a research institution that operates with OA agreements, or if your institution is interested in helping resident researchers navigate the complex processes involved in academic publishing and knowledge sharing, please contact <publishing@pensoft.net> to discuss potential collaborations.

This is a significant step forward for open science and accessibility to research findings. Congrats to both parties!
