Providing a Nutritious and Varied Diet for Your Bearded Dragon
Bearded Dragons are omnivorous creatures that require a diverse and healthy diet to thrive. By offering a wide range of foods, you can ensure that your dragon will have a long and healthy life. At Web Reptile, we prioritize the nutritional needs of our dragons and have developed a feeding routine that promotes their overall well-being.
A Balanced Salad for a Good Start to the Day
We begin our dragons’ day with a fresh and chopped salad, tailored to their size and nutritional requirements. Our salad mix includes spring greens, dark lettuces (never iceberg), rocket, watercress, butternut squash, dandelions, and a blend of dried flowers and herbs such as DragonFuel, Herbimix, and FlowerMix. To add even more variety, we also incorporate Arcadia InsectiGold or OnmiGold twice a week, which provides essential animal proteins.
Feeding Juveniles and Adults
When our dragons are ready to go to their new homes, we recommend feeding them insects 2-3 times a day. As they grow, this can be reduced to once a day and eventually to once every 2-3 days when they reach adulthood. It is important to monitor the amount of food they consume and aim for 5-10 minutes per feeding, rather than leaving insects in their enclosure at all times.
We offer a variety of appropriately sized, live feeder insects, including gut-loaded locusts, crickets, and roaches, as well as calciworms and silkworms when available. While waxworms, morios, and mealworms can also be used in moderation, we recommend avoiding them until the dragons reach maturity at around one year old. It is crucial to remember that relying solely on one type of insect or overfeeding can lead to health issues such as fatty liver disease or gout.
Supplementation for Optimal Health
To ensure that our dragons receive all the necessary vitamins and minerals, we lightly dust all their food with appropriate multivitamins and calcium. Our tip is to make sure the supplements do not overpower the taste of the food, as it may discourage the dragons from eating. Our supplementation guide is designed for healthy bearded dragons housed under T5 lighting and fed a diverse diet as mentioned above. If your dragon has specific dietary needs or has been exposed to inadequate UVB lighting in the past, adjustments may be necessary.
- Days 1 and 2: Arcadia Earth Pro A
- Day 3: Arcadia Calcium (with Magnesium)
- Days 4 and 5: Arcadia Earth Pro A
- Day 6: Arcadia Calcium (with Magnesium)
- Day 7: Vetark Nutrobal or Zoo Med ReptiVite WITH D3
We continuously review and update our supplementation regime to ensure the best possible health for our dragons. If your dragon is a rehome, has a history of nutritional deficiencies, or has been exposed to inadequate UVB lighting, it may be necessary to increase the use of a multivitamin supplement containing vitamin D3 for a longer period.
