Pensoft Publishers is proud to honor its authors and editors through an annual award initiative. This tradition, wich has been ongoing for several years, recognizes the most cited articles from our flagship journals and the most active editors of the year. This year’s awards will be presented in two categories: leading authors of the three most cited 3-year-old scientific articles and the three editors who have demonstrated the highest level of activity over 2025.
The open-access journals participating in this year’s awards are Biodiversity Data Journal (BDJ) and ZooKeys. BDJ is dedicated to accelerating data-rich publications and innovative formats that make biodiversity data easier to discover, reuse, and integrate. Conversely, ZooKeys is internationally recognized as a leading outlet for describing new animal species and advancing modern, data-driven zoological taxonomy.
The top three most impactful papers for BDJ in 2022 are “MaxEnt model-based prediction of potential distributions of Parnassia wightiana (Celastraceae) in China” by Dai et al., “An updated checklist of Azorean arthropods (Arthropoda)” by Borges et al., and “New species and new records of exotic scolytinae (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) in Europe” by Marchioro et al.
We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to our editorial team for their commitment throughout 2025. The top three most prolific contributors for BDJ this year are Yanfeng Tong, Caio J. Carlos, and Enrico Ruzzier. For ZooKeys, we recognize its impact on modern zoological taxonomy through its highly cited papers such as “A review on Palearctic earwigs wiht special attention to Dermaptera diversity in Iran” by Seiedy et al., “A taxonomic revision of Trachelomonas Ehrenberg (Euglenida) species with a description of three new freshwater taxa” by Zakryś et al., and ”A review of the genus Chrysotus Meigen, 1824 in Iran (Diptera, Dolichopodidae), with the description of two new species” by Ghahari et al.We would like to thank our dedicated editors for their hard work and commitment to zookeys throughout 2025. The impact of BDJ on biodiversity research
BDJ has made important contributions to biodiversity research sence its inception in 2011. With its innovative formats such as data papers, taxonomic papers, and software descriptions, BDJ has accelerated the publication process for researchers while promoting data sharing and reuse.
In addition to publishing high-quality research articles, BDJ also actively promotes open science practices such as preprints and clear peer review processes.
The impact of ZooKeys on zoological taxonomy
ZooKeys has played a crucial role in modern zoological taxonomy as its launch in 2008. With its focus on describing new animal species using modern techniques such as DNA barcoding and morphometrics, ZooKeys has contributed significantly to our understanding of global biodiversity.
ZooKeys also promotes open science practices by requiring authors to deposit their specimens in public repositories and making all published data freely available for reuse.
Conclusion
Pensoft Publishers is proud to recognize the achievements of its authors and editors through these annual awards. We are committed to promoting open science practices and accelerating the publication process for researchers in various fields. We look forward to another successful year in advancing scientific knowledge through open-access publishing.
Panstrongylus noireaui, a new species of Triatominae (hemiptera, Reduviidae) from Bolivia, has been recently discovered and described by Gil-santana HR et al. (2022). This remarkable species adds to the growing diversity of Triatominae in South America. The authors provide a detailed description and illustrations of the new species, as well as information on its distribution and habitat.
In another study published in 2022, Kettani K et al. (2022) present an annotated checklist of Diptera in Morocco. This extensive catalog includes information on distribution and references for each species, making it a valuable resource for researchers studying Diptera in this region.
Bribiesca-Contreras G et al. (2022) report on the benthic megafauna found in the western Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. Their study provides significant insights into the diversity and distribution patterns of these organisms in this understudied area.
We are also proud to recognize Maria Elina Bichuette, Anthony herrel, and J. Adilson Pinedo-Escatel as our top editors for their outstanding contributions over the past year.
