A team of international researchers has recently discovered three new species of fascinating, pustular, tree-dwelling toads in Africa.These⁢ unique amphibians have found a solution for reproducing away from water -⁤ they skip the tadpole phase and give birth to live toadlets rather.‍ The ​study has been‍ published in the open-access scientific journal Vertebrate zoology.

Most textbooks only tell one⁣ story about​ frog reproduction – eggs hatch into tadpoles which then grow into froglets and eventually adults. However, this is not ‌the case for three newly identified species found in Tanzania.⁢ These frogs⁢ belong to a unique ‍group of African toads in the‍ genus Nectophrynoides,‌ commonly known as “tree toads.”

Rather of laying eggs that hatch into tadpoles,female tree toads carry their offspring inside their bodies and ​give birth to fully formed,miniature toads. This makes them one of the few amphibians in the world capable of internal fertilization and true‍ live birth.

“ItS common⁤ knowlege⁣ that frogs ⁢go through metamorphosis – it’s one of the ‍classic paradigms in biology. However, there are actually around 8000 ⁣frog species with a wide variety of ⁤reproductive methods, many of which do not follow this well-known story,” explains ⁢Associate⁢ Professor Mark D. Scherz, Curator for Herpetology at the Natural History Museum denmark and co-author​ on the study.

The three newly described species are all part ⁣of the Nectophrynoides genus and have been named N.luhomeroensis, ‍ N. ⁤kapanga, and N. uzungwensis. They were‌ discovered during a survey of the eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania, ⁢which is known for ⁢its high levels of biodiversity.

“The discovery of these new species highlights the importance of conducting thorough surveys in ‌understudied areas like⁤ the⁤ Eastern Arc Mountains,” says dr. Michele Menegon, lead author on the study and⁢ researcher at Museo ‍delle Scienze di Trento (MUSE)‍ in Italy.

The researchers also⁤ found that these tree toads have unique ⁤color patterns on their skin,which may serve as a form of camouflage against predators or help them attract mates.

A Rare Phenomenon

the concept​ of live-birth among frogs was first discovered over 120 years ago by‍ German researcher Gustav Tornier. He presented his findings on a Tanzanian toad that gave birth to live young at the‌ Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences⁣ in Berlin.At the ⁣time, this was⁢ the only known frog species in the world with this unique reproductive strategy.

The original⁤ specimens collected by Tornier‌ are now housed at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. Through the use of ‍advanced ​techniques known as ‘museomics’, the research team was able to extract‍ DNA from these 120-year-old specimens. This​ allowed⁤ them to determine which ‌populations these old specimens‌ belonged to,providing valuable‍ insights for future studies on these unique toads.

Christian Thrane, first author⁣ of the study and a⁣ researcher at the University ‍of Copenhagen, explains that previous phylogenetic work⁢ had already hinted at unrecognized ⁢diversity among these live-bearing toads. However, by examining hundreds of preserved specimens from various natural history museums,⁣ he was able to gain a better understanding of ‌their⁢ morphological diversity and describe three new ⁤species.

Along with their unique reproductive strategies,these‍ newly discovered species also possess ‌large skin glands‌ all over⁤ their bodies – a characteristic shared ⁢with other members of their ‌genus ​Nectophrynoides. These glands produce toxins that serve as defense mechanisms against predators.

John V. Lyakurwa, a researcher from the University ​of Dar es Salaam and coauthor on the study, ​echoes this concern, stating that the ⁤forests where these toads‍ are known to occur are disappearing quickly.

The ‍situation is dire for these tree toads, with one species already extinct in the wild​ and another not observed since its ⁤discovery in 2003.⁣ The future of​ these beautiful creatures is uncertain.
