Pensoft continues to prioritize innovation in academic data management and scientific outreach, making events like Living Data 2025 highly significant.
In order to effectively conserve biodiversity on a global scale, it is crucial to have consolidated, streamlined, and open access scientific data. This was the central theme of the groundbreaking conference, Living Data 2025.The event aimed to foster a transcontinental dialog on past, present, and future research into the biosphere.

The conference took place from October 21st-24th in Bogotá, Colombia and was made possible through collaboration between biodiversity networks GBIF (Global Biodiversity Data Facility), TDWG (Biodiversity Information Standards), OBIS (Ocean Biogeographic Information System), GEO BON (Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network), with support from the Humboldt Institute.
With a global audience and a four-day agenda covering diverse innovations and challenges in this field, the stage was set for an inclusive and productive dialogue on biodiversity data.
Pensoft took advantage of this opportunity to participate in the conference.Founder and CEO Prof. Lyubomir Penev, CTO teodor Georgiev, and Science Communication Expert Peter Bozakov represented the open-access scholarly publisher and technology provider as:
Pensoft was front and center at the event with its own booth displaying their work in academic publishing, science communication, and FAIR biodiversity data innovation. The booth featured a wide array of materials covering various scientific subjects and endeavors. The ensuing discussions reflected a shared commitment to advancing biodiversity research today and in the future as potential avenues for collaboration were explored.

Pensoft at Living Data 2025: A Recap
Pensoft was proud to be a part of the recent Living Data 2025 conference, held virtually from October 21-23, 2025. The event brought together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss the latest advancements in data-driven research and its impact on society.
As a sponsor of the Best Student Presentation award and co-organizer of a symposium, Pensoft showcased its commitment to supporting young scientists and promoting open data for long-term use. The publisher also highlighted its involvement in various ongoing projects that aim to repurpose and reuse scientific results for greater impact.
Sponsorship of Best Student Presentation Award
In recognition of its dedication to nurturing early-career researchers, Pensoft sponsored the Best Student Presentation award at Living Data 2025. During the closing ceremony, Prof. Lyubomir Penev presented Mélisande teng with this prestigious award for her outstanding presentation on “Individual identification and call type classification with unsupervised learning.” as part of her prize, Teng will have the opportunity to publish her research in one of Pensoft’s open-access journals.
Co-Organizer of Symposium
Pensoft joined forces with LifeWatch ERIC and Naturalis Biodiversity Center to organise a symposium titled ”Long Live Biodiversity Data: Knowledge Transfer and Continuity across research Projects.” this session emphasized the importance of repurposing scientific results beyond their initial purpose through open data sharing and effective communication strategies. attendees engaged actively with this topic during both sessions.
The symposium featured presentations from several ongoing projects that Pensoft is involved in, including Biodiversity Meets Data, B-Cubed, OneSTOP, BioAgora, FORSAID, WildPosh, IP4OS and GATE. The event also highlighted the success of completed projects such as SOLO and eLTER and acknowledged the contributions of BiCKL, EuropaBON, HOMED and PoshBee.
the symposium featured 16 abstracts with over 90 contributing authors from more than 20 initiatives and 30 affiliated institutions. It served as a testament to the potential for scientific results to have a lasting impact beyond their initial purpose.
Conclusion
The Living Data 2025 conference was an excellent opportunity for Pensoft to showcase its commitment to supporting young scientists and promoting open data sharing for long-term use. As a sponsor of the Best Student Presentation award and co-organizer of a symposium on repurposing scientific results for greater impact, Pensoft demonstrated its dedication to advancing data-driven research.
session #1 and Session #2 of the Living Data 2025 conference are now available for viewing on YouTube. These sessions, along with extended abstracts from the conference, will be published in the open-access journal Biodiversity Information Standards and Science (BISS) later this year.BISS is the official scholarly outlet of TDWG, launched in 2017 in partnership with Pensoft.
The extended abstracts collection was initiated by a dedicated call from TDWG and will provide further insight into the perspectives, opportunities, and issues discussed at the conference. The event was a significant milestone for the international biodiversity community, facilitating an exchange of views, results, and opportunities on a broad geographical and multidisciplinary scale with tangible outcomes for our planet’s future.Pensoft continues to innovate academic data management and scientific outreach across borders through formats like these conferences.
