The Impact of Education and Passion on Turtle Conservation

Chiara Gorodesky, the Communications Officer for the Turtle Conservancy (TC) in New York, was delighted to meet with the environmental club at TC’s partner school, Mount Olive High School. The club, made up of dedicated students from grades 9 to 12, meets bi-weekly during the academic year to discuss all things turtle-related. Not only do they assist Ms. Gorodesky in caring for the animals, but they also take part in various environmentally-themed projects throughout the school year. During their meetings, students were introduced to the fascinating world of turtles and their unique characteristics, starting with local species. It was heartwarming to discover that each student had a personal “turtle story” to share and how enthusiastic and joyful everyone was when a live turtle was brought into the discussion circle. They learned about the specific needs of the turtles kept in the school’s green room and the global threats facing turtles.

By combining education with conservation efforts, these young students are proving that knowledge and passion can spark positive change in their local ecosystem and beyond. The Turtle Conservancy is proud to be a part of the Mount Olive High School Environmental Club and looks forward to returning in September.

Last week, the Turtle Conservancy visited Nordhoff High School in Ojai, California, as part of the school’s summer course on college and career readiness. The purpose of this visit was to engage the enthusiastic young minds in an educational talk, with the aim of inspiring and guiding them towards meaningful careers in conservation. The main focus of the talk was to demonstrate how conservation principles can be integrated into various fields, allowing each individual to make a positive impact while pursuing their passions.

Education and passion are powerful tools in the fight for turtle conservation. By instilling a love and understanding of these creatures in young minds, we can create a generation of conservationists who will continue to protect and preserve turtles for years to come.
