When scientists stumbled upon an unfamiliar orchid species thriving in the cloud forests and páramos of Colombia’s Western and Central Andes, they were instantly reminded of the iconic opening line from Gabriel García Márquez’s 1981 novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
