The Deadly Venom of the Eastern Coral Snake
The Eastern coral snake is a highly venomous species that can be found in the United States. Its neurotoxic venom affects the central nervous system, leading to respiratory failure and paralysis if not treated immediately.
Despite its deadly reputation, coral snakes are generally shy and will onyl bite if provoked or handled. There are three species of coral snakes in the US: the Eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius), Texas coral snake (M. tener), and Sonoran coral snake (Micruroides euryxanthus).
The Colorful Appearance of the Eastern Coral Snake
The Eastern coral snake can grow up to 3 feet in length and is known for its distinctive red, black, and yellow bands. This coloration has given rise to a popular rhyme used to identify it: “red touch yellow, kill a fellow; red touch black, venom lack.” However, this rhyme is not always accurate as there are variations in color among individual snakes and other species that do not follow this pattern.

The Potency of the Venom and Its Effects
The venom of the Eastern coral snake is highly neurotoxic, meaning it affects the nervous system. When injected into a victim, it can cause respiratory failure and paralysis. While coral snake bites are rare compared to other venomous snakes in the US, thay should still be taken seriously.
According to a research paper titled “Epidemiology and characteristics of coral snake bites reported to the National poison Data System (2006‒2022),” there are approximately 5,000 venomous snake bites in the US every year, with less than 100 cases involving coral snakes.

It is crucial to note that not all coral snake bites result in envenomation (venom being injected into the victim). In fact, dry bites (bites without venom) occurred in 7% of reported cases.

The best way to avoid a coral snake bite is to leave them alone and not handle or touch them. If you encounter a coral snake, give it plenty of space and it will most likely retreat. It is also important to educate yourself on the appearance and behavior of different species in your area.
